The SAH Women in Architecture Affiliate Group (SAH WiA AG) is a Board-approved affiliate group of members of the Society of Architectural Historians who share a common, scholarly, or other, interest aligned with the SAH mission.
.
The Mission of SAH Women in Architecture Affiliate Group is to support the breadth of interests of SAH members, to advocate the international, national, and regional contributions of women in architecture, to champion the cause of gender equity and the diversity of professional engagements in the integral field of the built environment.
.
The Objectives of the Group are to provide a platform for collaborative scholarship and a forum for discussion; to document, support, and advance research, publication, education, and exhibition initiatives; and to integrate professional standing of women in architecture with broader studies across cultures and geographies.
.
The Guidelines are envisioned to acknowledge the vast landscapes of yet latent legacies, contexts, and perspectives, to record the largely unwritten women’s professional histories, to invite questions and debates, stimulate studies and discussions in emerging and bordering areas, and to address current work and the cultivation and empowerment of the next generation. The gravity of objectives for the group is determined by an urgency to fill the void in resources about women’s contribution to the built environment, leadership, and new trajectories of global transitions.

I am writing regarding an upcoming symposium and to introduce myself as a new member of the Communications/Media Team.

Symposium Next Week: Rome and Virtual Options, Jan 25-27

Announcement: We are pleased to announce the first edition of the conference series WoArch (Women in Architecture) entitled, “Women as Builders, Designers, and Critics of the Built Environment Before 1800,” will take place in Rome, January 25 to 27, 2024. This initial symposium is organized by the University of Arkansas Rome Center in collaboration with the School of Architecture + Planning at the University of Texas at San Antonio. WoArch is also supported by the Women in Architecture Affiliate Group of the Society of Architectural Historians. The event will be hosted in person at the Rome Center in Palazzo Taverna, Rome, and will live stream on the Rome Center YouTube channels. To view the speakers’ presentations online, please visit our website. Please see attachments for more information.

Symposium description: For almost 30 years, the literature investigating women and the built environment before the modern era has focused on women’s patronage of architecture. This symposium is designed to open a discussion about what is missing from this conversation yet can be found in the historical record: the roles that women of various social classes played in shaping architecture, landscapes, and cities in diverse parts of the world and the cultural and political implications of their activities. In part, the symposium calls for a re-interpretation of patronizing activities by women and, from another point of view, it directs the spotlight toward women engaging in socio-political urban reform, creating networks of design influence, managing, and participating in construction, and serving as the designer the built environment across a broad geographic scope before modern industrialization.

Who is planning to attend the symposium? Which sessions/topics are you looking forward to?

A little bit about me . . . Bailey Morgan Brown Mitchell.  I am an assistant professor at Oklahoma State University. Situated in Oklahoma, home to 39 seats of tribal government, I am proximate to a wealth of tribal and Indigenous research opportunities, but otherwise currently physically isolated from much of architectural discourse. I earned two degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Design: a MArch II degree and a Masters in Design Studies degree. My scholarship focuses on law and architecture with a particular emphasis on First Americans’ political sovereignty; this scholarship is explored through architectural image and model production in addition to historical research. Undergirding my research work are issues of property, gender, religion, historic preservation, and the suburban home. I also teach design studio courses and an “Introduction to Architecture” freshman lecture course. I believe that these circumstances of my geography, research area, and academic background uniquely position what I can contribute to the SAH Women in Architecture Affiliate Group Council. I am always open to collaborations; feel free to reach out to be directly about anything at all!

Let me know if there are ways that you would like these discussion threads to develop! Advice, tips, and any other comments are always welcome.
