    Abstract:
Mapping Philippine Material Culture (MPMC) is a project that aggregates digital images of Philippine objects in museums worldwide, contextualizing these objects in collaboration with Philippine scholars and “culture bearers.” The online platform relies on images that are either in the public domain or have creative commons licenses, and currently hosts images of over 8,000 objects related to Philippine material culture up until the mid-twentieth century. Nearly all of the objects featured hail from collections in the United States and Europe, with 3,000 held by the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology at Harvard University alone. Besides serving as a partial global inventory of Philippine cultural objects, MPMC also features online exhibits that bring together objects from disparate collections with a similar theme, providing cultural context along with further sources for study. Lastly, MPMC offers a series dubbed In Conversation, which contains “interactions” between scholars, artists, and descendants of the ethno-linguistic groups that created the objects, with the goal of “decolonial exploration.” The MPMC project is led by Dr. Maria Cristina Juan and Marian Pastor Roces, as well as the Philippine Studies Digital Research Group, which includes contributors based in Germany and Spain. Dr. Juan serves as the project head for Philippine Studies at SOAS, while Pastor Roces is a Philippine scholar, curator and art critic who previously created a global inventory of Philippine artifacts for the centennial of Philippine independence. MPMC is funded/supported by the Philippine House of Representatives, the Philippine Embassy in the UK, and SOAS University London.
